The “Travelsavers.com Hottest Honeymoons Survey,” which polled 2,500 independent travel agencies nationwide, revealed the following as the top 10 picks for honeymoon travel destinations:
1. Hawaii
2. Jamaica
3. Cancun/Mexico
4. Caribbean cruises
5. St. Lucia
6. Disney/Orlando
7. Aruba
8. Tahiti/Bora Bora
9. Bermuda
10. Las Vegas
“These destinations are also perfect for couples who are celebrating their anniversary, wedding, renewing their vows, or just looking to make some magic together on their next getaway,” said Anne Marie Powell-Moebes, Chief Marketing Officer for TRAVELSAVERS, an international marketing organization for travel agents. “For the romantically-inclined, there are so many fascinating travel options available. And those thinking of escaping for a long Valentine’s Day weekend might want to consider the warm-weather
destinations that are easy to get to from the U.S. and offer great value for vacation dollars spent.”
Back to honeymooners, just what do they like to do on their first vacation as husband-and-wife? Respondents ranked the following in order of importance and appeal (from most popular to least popular):
1. Relaxing on the beach
2. Enjoying time together at a deluxe secret hideaway
3. Taking a cruise
4. Livin’ it up wherever the nightlife is jumpin’
5. Embarking on an adventure travel excursion
6. Touring one of the world’s great cities
… and finally
7. Shopping ’til they drop.
Speaking of spending, the survey showed that the majority (49%) of honeymooners lay out between $3,000-$3,900 for their trip. Just over one quarter splurge in the amount of $4,000 or more, while just under one quarter spend $2,000-$2,900. A handful (2%) pay $1,000-$1,999 for their nuptial vacation.
The factors that most influence honeymooners when booking their travel are “value for the money,” “location,” and “price.” Other key considerations include “on-site activities,” “ease of reaching destination,” and “having a new experience.”
Says the survey, those looking for a thrill-of-a-lifetime honeymoon or romance travel adventure might want to consider booking: a Costa Rican jungle tour or 4×4 excursion, a Galapagos dive trip, a hike through the Canadian Rockies, an Alaskan cruise, backpacking for a month through Europe, skydiving in Europe, trekking through the Amazonian rainforest in Peru, a Kenya safari, camping in the mountains of Maui, hiking the Appalachian Mountains, shark feeds off Bora Bora, or even volcano touring in
South America. A survey respondent reported that one couple actually trained for and flew a fighter jet on their honeymoon.
Travel agents polled by the travelsavers.com survey also named the following as some of the most unusual post-nuptial trips (all of which also work well as anniversary or other romance-related travel destinations): an over-water bungalow in Tahiti, a spa weekend in Fiji, barging in France, a visit to Pago Pago, a Cabo/San Lucas fishing trip, an excursion to the Cook Islands, or a romantic cruise in the Greek Isles. Or how about going to Indonesia to see the Komodo dragons and orangutans, or staying at a ranch in the Australian Outback? Why not go all out, said one travel agent survey respondent, and book a trip around the world to celebrate tying the knot.
